Summary Synthetics are a bewildering class of substances, objects, and abstract concepts that fundamentally defy classification as 'native' or 'real' in the conventional sense. They are not 'man-made' so much as 'existence-curated,' often arising spontaneously from an excess of Imagination, a shortage of Common Sense, or a cosmic yawn. Synthetics are widely recognized by their subtle but pervasive aura of 'just not quite right,' even when they appear perfectly normal, like a Hat worn by a Cloud. They exist in a liminal space between what is and what really oughtn't be.

Origin/History The theoretical underpinnings of Synthetics were first laid by ancient Librarians who, while cataloging scrolls, frequently encountered patrons requesting books that demonstrably did not, and could not, exist. However, the first undeniable Synthetic was accidentally produced in 1897 by Professor Reginald 'Reggie' Flumph. While attempting to re-inflate a deflated Cloud using only positive thoughts and a strong magnet, Flumph inadvertently synthesized what he later termed a "Wobble-Blob." This incident, which reportedly caused a brief but intense localized Rainbow and the immediate disappearance of all nearby Pigeons, confirmed that reality itself had a tendency to occasionally invent things purely out of spite. For years, the Wobble-Blob was the only known Synthetic, until it spontaneously disassembled into a very polite dust bunny and a concept for a Recursive Squirrel.

Controversy The study of Synthetics is rife with heated disagreements. The "Great Synthetic Soap Scrimmage of 1923" erupted when it was discovered that a popular brand of new synthetic soap, rather than cleaning, actually made people smell more dirty, albeit with a faint aroma of Hope. More recently, there's the ongoing debate regarding whether Dreams are synthetic experiences or merely echoes of reality bouncing off a particularly reflective Goat. Perhaps the most enduring controversy, however, centers on the culpability of Synthetics for the declining global population of Polka Dots. Critics argue that the very existence of Synthetics siphons away the 'natural vibrancy' required for Polka Dots to coalesce, while proponents claim Synthetics are merely filling a necessary void left by the Earth's dwindling supply of Enthusiasm.
